Who can join the Navo Band?
We will accept every incoming 5th grader who signs up for Band! If you are already in 6th grade and want to begin in 7th grade, please have your parent contact Ms. Irby and we can setup a time to meet.
Do I need any experience?
No! Your elementary music teacher has already established the foundation needed. Everyone starts from the beginning together.
Can I play the ______?
That depends! Come to our Instrument Fitting on Saturday, April 11th and try out each instrument. Every person has different physical features that could or hinder you from playing certain instruments. Our job is to help you select one that you'll succeed at and enjoy the most!
What happens at the Instrument Fitting?
You will meet with professional musicians/band directors for every instrument. You are welcome to try each one! They will show you how the instrument is played and have you try creating your first sounds. Based on this experience, you will let us know your top 3 choices. You are guaranteed one of those top 3 choices! After fittings have ended, the directors will finalize placements and you will receive a Golden Ticket with your instrument placement.
Do you teach piano or guitar?
No, we do not. We have a Jazz Band that includes those instruments. If you already have experience with those instruments and want to join Jazz Band, reach out to Mr. Carnley and we will setup and audition time!
Do you teach the drums?
We teach Percussion - this includes mallet instruments, snare drum, and accessories. Drum set is not taught in Beginner Band.
How much does Band cost?
Each student in the program pays their "Class Fee" of $60. This gets students their Binder, Dividers, Pencil Bag/Pencils, Music, Beginner Book, and T-Shirt.
Flutes, Clarinets, Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, and Percussion rent their instruments from a music store for a monthly fee.
Oboes, Bassoons, French Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba rent their instrument from Navo with a one time maintenance fee of $125 (if you are on free/reduced lunch your fee will differ)
Can I be in Band and _____?
Yes! Over 75% of the Navo Band Program is in another activity as well as band. All that is required is communication and equal effort for both activities.
What is Band Class like?
Beginner Band classes are grouped by instrument. All trumpets have class with only the trumpets, all the flutes with the flutes, etc. All Beginners start by learning HOW to read music, then learn instrument assembly/care, and we learn music and new songs throughout the year! As students progress, we learn more challenging music similar to what the 7th and 8th graders get to play!
What is the commitment level outside of school?
Beginner Band students have 1-2 rehearsals outside of school for the entire year. These are to prepare for their full concert with all the instruments combined. Other than that, we require students to practice their instruments at home.
